Courtyard makeover brings new life to Wansbeck’s Child Health Unit
The courtyard at Wansbeck General Hospital’s child health department has had a massive refurbishment to enhance the patient experience.
This was made possible thanks to a kind donation by Infrastructure Managers Limited (IML).
£3,000 was donated to the charity from IML, who have been involved in managing Phase 2 of the Wansbeck site for many years. Keen to support the site, IML give generously to projects like this in order to improve and enhance the area for patients and staff alike.
The goal of the refurbishment, led by the charity team, was to enhance the well-being of our younger patients by creating a vibrant space that supports recovery. The courtyard offers a safe outdoor retreat where children can enjoy fresh air, engage in light activity, play or simply find a moment away from the clinical environment.
Karen Streener, Bright’s grants, delivery and impact manager, said: “Prior to the refurbishment, the courtyard was unusable and in a state of disrepair. The space was dominated by uneven paving, overgrown greenery, and old wooden benches, making it an uninviting and uninspiring area for service users, staff, and visitors alike.
“Our refurbishment aimed to completely transform the courtyard into a welcoming, therapeutic environment. The paving was replaced with a colourful non-slip, wheelchair-accessible surface and playful graphics.
“We believe this renewed space promotes healing, reduces stress, and improves the overall experience for everyone.”

Huge thanks to IML for their continued support, as well as investors Alba Infra Partners.
