Bright Charity boosts patient safety at Wansbeck General Hospital with new equipment

New equipment has been purchased from donations to Bright Northumbria Healthcare Charity, enhancing patient safety at Wansbeck General Hospital.

The Hoverjack Patient Transfer System is used across Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust’s hospitals and community sites, to safely lift patients or visitors from the floor following a fall.

The system uses a multi-level air mattress and blower unit to gently raise a person from the ground to a safe position, helping prevent injury and strain for both patients and staff.

Until recently, the Hoverjack’s blower unit required access to a mains power supply – creating challenges in locations such as bathrooms, corridors and outdoor areas like car parks. In some cases, patients and staff had to wait while power leads were sourced to reach these spaces.

Thanks to funding from Bright, the team at Northumbria Healthcare Facilities Management (NHFM) has been able to introduce a portable, rechargeable power pack and trolley system that allows the Hoverjack to be used anywhere – even in remote or hard-to-access areas.

This simple but effective addition means patients can receive help more quickly, safely and comfortably – wherever they are.

Charlene Sturgeon, Head Porter at Wansbeck General Hospital, said: “It has been absolutely fantastic to receive this funding from the Bright Charity for such an essential piece of equipment.

“Before this, we often found it difficult to transport the Hoverjack to more challenging locations, including narrow corridors and outdoor areas. Now, with this new support, we can safely and efficiently use the equipment across the entire hospital without restriction.

“This upgrade will make a significant difference not only to our patients – supporting their comfort, dignity, and recovery – but also to our staff by reducing the risk of avoidable injuries and strains. It truly enhances the way we deliver care every day.”

Even the smallest of donations can go a long way to support patients, staff and visitors of Northumbria Healthcare. If you’d like to support, please visit: https://bright.northumbria.nhs.uk/donate/
