Celebrating the Alnwick League of Friends during Volunteers’ Week

Alnwick Community Hospital first opened in 1919 – and alongside it began the Alnwick League of Friends.

From the very beginning, local businesses and communities came together to raise funds, supporting projects and purchasing equipment to enhance patient care.

In 1956, following the introduction of the NHS, Alnwick’s ‘Friends’ joined the National Association of Hospital Friends, connecting with voluntary groups across the country.

Today, 23 dedicated members remain enthusiastic supporters of the hospital. They run a shop and trolley service three afternoons a week, offering refreshments, a friendly face and conversation to patients and visitors.

Anne Harper MBE, Chairman of the League of Friends Alnwick Hospital, said:

“It can be most interesting finding out where patients have come from, and they enjoy telling us about their family and friends. This is a most satisfying and rewarding part of volunteering.

The staff at the hospital make us feel most welcome and are so friendly – especially when we arrive with the ‘goodies’ trolley!”

Over the years, volunteers have packed bags in local supermarkets, hosted bridge evenings, and organised sponsored walks and runs to raise funds.

Their annual coffee morning remains their key fundraiser, drawing strong support from the local community. Thanks to these efforts, they have funded a wide range of enhancements at Alnwick Community Hospital, including:

  • 24-hour cardiology recorders
  • A RITA machine
  • TV sets for patients
  • Specialist chairs for stroke patients and Day Surgery

They have also created a commemorative garden in memory of their late President, Elizabeth, Duchess of Northumberland, and former President Jack Deeble – offering patients a peaceful outdoor space to enjoy all year round.

As we celebrate Volunteers’ Week, we recognise the incredible impact of the Alnwick League of Friends. Their dedication, kindness and fundraising continue to make a real difference to patients, visitors and staff across our Trust.

To mark the League’s 70th anniversary, a special event will be held later this year. The current President, Duchess Jane, will present the hospital with a mobile bladder scanner and VeinViewer device – further enhancing patient care for the future.
