During the development of the burns project, the team recognised the need to provide teaching in the rural communities about the dangers of fire in the home, how to treat burns when they happened and the importance of early hospital treatment.
To do this they teamed up with KCMC’s Community Health Department to arrange visits to local schools to provide teaching in fire safety. The lesson was delivered by play acting of common accidents that happen in the home such as spillage of hot porridge onto children, the use of candles under mosquito nets, and loose clothing catching fire when cooking over open fires.
The children enjoyed taking part in the playacting and were encouraged to share the safety information with their parents. Community Health Workers were also invited to attend the training and pass on the information to the people of their villages.
