In February 2018, Bright decided to fund D/deaf awareness classes for staff.
It became clear very quickly that staff wanted to learn about the challenges faced by D/deaf patients and staff in the hospital setting.
The programme upskills our staff, so they have the communication skills and knowledge to interact confidently with D/deaf patients. The programme significantly improves our patient and staff experience by increasing awareness and understanding about the different cultures of people living with hearing difficulties as well as the barriers they can face.
It also helps to ensure D/deaf patients are included in decisions about their healthcare needs and that they understand what is happening throughout their care. We aim to support everyone to be able to reach their full potential and we work with them to remove any barriers they might face and integrate their experiences and insight into our services.
To date 1,237 staff have attended training.
