Supporting patients through better anxiety management

Thanks to charity funding, Occupational Therapists working across the trust have received a two-day specialist training course in anxiety management.

The course was designed to equip OTs with practical, evidence-based methods to help patients manage anxiety as part of their everyday care. It brought together palliative care Occupational Therapists alongside colleagues from other services, ensuring that learning and best practice could be shared widely across the Trust.

Participants described the training as engaging, supportive and highly relevant to their clinical work. The trainer created a relaxed and safe environment, encouraging open discussion, reflection and group work. Many attendees highlighted the value of the interactive elements, which helped them build confidence in applying new tools and approaches directly with patients.

As a result, they now have increased confidence and a wider range of strategies to support patients experiencing anxiety, including those with neurodiversity. This will help ensure patients receive more holistic, responsive care that addresses both physical and emotional needs.

The impact of the training has also extended beyond patient care. Many participants reported that the course helped them reflect on their own wellbeing, giving them practical strategies to better manage their own anxiety. In addition, those in supervisory roles felt better equipped to support colleagues and promote a more compassionate, psychologically informed working environment.

Feedback from attendees described the course as “exceptional”, noting the useful links, tools and techniques that can be incorporated into current practice. The training has strengthened clinical skills, supported staff wellbeing and enhanced the quality of care patients receive.

This project demonstrates how charity funding can make a meaningful difference – not only by improving patient outcomes, but also by supporting NHS staff to feel confident, skilled and resilient in their roles.
