Volunteers trained to Make Every Contact Count

On Monday 14 July, volunteers from the Northumbria Volunteer Service (NVS) attended Making Every Contact Count (MECC) Training delivered by the Public Health Team.

During the session, volunteers looked at the importance of MECC as a tool to reduce health inequalities using the power of a conversation to listen, encourage and signpost people to support and information to improve their health and wellbeing.

Rachel Owers, Volunteering Project Support Officer says “Our NVS volunteers help support and interact with patients and members of the public every day, whether that’s helping guide them to their appointments, making them a warm drink when they need it most or simply providing some friendly company.

MECC training equips our volunteers with the skills and knowledge to utilise everyday interactions and their ability to offer support and guidance around an individual’s health and wellbeing, providing a positive and long-lasting impact on our patients and visitors.”

MECC conversations are simple interactions which can make a positive difference to someone’s health and wellbeing. Anyone can have a MECC conversation, anytime, and anywhere, regardless of their profession or background. The smallest changes can make the biggest difference.
