From volunteer to career: Michael’s journey with the NVS

Michael Smith has shared his career journey with us – beginning in a call centre, volunteering with the NVS, and now working as a porter in the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital.
In his time spent volunteering, Michael carried out a wide range of roles. He became familiar with the hospital and the people there – an experience which he believes helped him take the leap into a full-time role as a porter.
Michael reflects on the supportive environment, the friendships he’s built, and how volunteering helped him get a feel for working in healthcare before making a career change. His story is a great example of how volunteering can be a stepping stone into the NHS.
