New equipment to enhance care for vulnerable patients at Hexham General Hospital

Patients on Ward 2 at Hexham General Hospital are set to benefit from more accurate monitoring and enhanced care thanks to funding from Bright Charity.
The ward, which specialises in general medicine and cares for many older patients with complex health needs, has received support to purchase a dedicated urine output weighing scale.
The equipment enables nursing staff to accurately measure urine output for patients who use incontinence pads or bedpans, providing vital clinical information that can help identify potential health concerns, such as dehydration, infections and kidney problems, at an earlier stage.
Sharon Harrison, Education & development lead, said: “Good fluid balance monitoring is often one of the earliest indicators that a patient may be becoming unwell. These scales give staff a much more accurate way of measuring output for patients, helping us identify concerns such as reduced urine output or significant fluid loss earlier and make timely decisions about care.
“It’s a simple change, but one that has the potential to make a real difference to patient safety and patient experience.”
The new equipment also supports the trust’s wider quality improvement work to strengthen fluid balance monitoring and improve the early recognition of deteriorating patients.
While it may appear to be a simple piece of equipment, this is a great example of how donations to Bright Charity can have a direct impact on patient care. By funding practical tools that support clinical teams, donors are helping staff deliver safer, more effective and person-centred care to some of our most vulnerable patients.
For patients and their families, that can mean faster identification of health concerns, more timely treatment and improved outcomes. Thanks to the generosity of supporters, this equipment will continue to benefit patients at Hexham General Hospital for years to come.
